The Boots in the Other Foot Bainimarama
In propagating the decision of the illegal regime prohibiting the holding of the Rewa Church annual conference, despot Bainimarama and his illegal regime have painted a picture that they have brought the Church to its knees. The truth is that Bainimarama and the senior military officers and members of the military council have failed miserably. The Church had merely stuck to its principles telling the junta in no uncertain terms of its firm stance that regardless of the financial consequences, it will uphold its duty to God to be the prophetic voice concerning the dignity of the people; that when government and the military oppress, impoverish, deny the people their freedom and basic rights, the Church must and will continue to stand up and speak out.
While the offer of negotiation looks appealing, the Church has been aware all along that as long as dictator Bainimarama and the military is in control, any negotiation must not result in the Church surrendering its independence to be the prophetic voice upholding Gods principles and high moral grounds. Jesus is portrayed in the Bible as the worlds supreme liberator: The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor.1 Paul tells us that to be saved by Jesus Christ is to be set free: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.2
Further, as is now evident, Bainimarama and his government have already shown the world that they cannot be trusted with their undertakings. These rule out any meaningful negotiation.
So to the tin pot dictator Bainimarama; the boots in the other foot. You have merely shot yourself in the leg!
